Description
The Polikarpov I-153 plastic model kit in 1/48 scale from ICM represents a Soviet biplane fighter that later appeared in German service during World War II. This boxing includes the aircraft together with pilot and ground personnel figures, allowing the creation of a small operational scene around the captured aircraft.
The I-153, known as the "Chaika", was one of the last operational biplane fighters developed in the Soviet Union before the widespread adoption of monoplane fighters. Introduced in the late 1930s, it featured retractable landing gear and improved maneuverability compared with earlier designs. During the early stages of World War II a number of these aircraft were captured by German forces and evaluated or used for training and testing purposes.
Polikarpov I-153 in German Evaluation Service
Captured I-153 aircraft were operated by several German training and testing units. These aircraft were typically repainted with German markings and used to familiarize pilots and technicians with Soviet aircraft technology. Such aircraft could appear at training schools, research facilities, or support air units during the early 1940s.
For modelers: The combination of aircraft and figures allows the creation of a small airfield vignette. The open cockpit and biplane wing structure also provide opportunities for careful painting and rigging work typical for aircraft of this period.
