The IAR-80DC was created to train pilots transitioning to frontline fighter variants. It retained the general airframe characteristics of the IAR-80 series while incorporating a dual-control cockpit suitable for instructional use.

This training variant was operated by the Romanian Air Force to support pilot instruction during the wartime period. The IAR-80DC played an important role in preparing aircrews for operational service on single-seat fighter aircraft.
