Description
Marston Mat WWII US Landing Mat is a 1/72 scale plastic diorama set by ICM representing portable steel runway panels used by U.S. forces during World War II. Known as Marston Mat or pierced steel planking (PSP), these panels allowed rapid construction of temporary airstrips in forward operating areas.
During World War II, portable runway systems were widely deployed by U.S. engineering units to support aircraft operations in remote or newly secured locations. The perforated steel planking could be assembled quickly over prepared ground, creating durable landing surfaces for fighters, transport aircraft, and support aviation units.
Marston Mat - Portable World War II Airfield Surface
Marston Mat runway sections were designed for fast deployment and easy transport. The interlocking metal panels formed a stable surface capable of supporting repeated aircraft movements even on soft or uneven terrain.
For modelers: Landing mat surfaces can serve as a realistic base for aircraft displays or small airfield scenes. Subtle weathering such as worn metal surfaces, dust, and tire marks can help integrate the mat naturally with surrounding terrain.
