Description
CSS David was a small Confederate torpedo boat developed during the American Civil War for harbor and coastal operations. This plastic model kit by Mikro Mir represents the vessel in 1/35 scale, depicting one of the early experimental craft designed to deliver spar torpedoes against enemy ships.
The CSS David belonged to a group of compact semi-submersible torpedo boats built by the Confederate Navy. These vessels carried a spar torpedo mounted on a long pole extending from the bow. During operations the craft approached a target vessel and detonated the explosive charge upon contact, reflecting the early development of naval torpedo technology in the nineteenth century.
CSS David - American Civil War Torpedo Boat
The design featured a narrow cylindrical hull with a low profile intended to reduce visibility on the water. Powered by steam propulsion and operated by a small crew, boats of the David type were used in attempts to attack blockading ships near Confederate ports during the Civil War.
For modelers: The CSS David has a compact cylindrical hull with a prominent spar torpedo mounted at the bow. Careful alignment of the spar assembly and smooth finishing along the hull will help preserve the distinctive silhouette of this unusual nineteenth-century naval craft in 1/35 scale.
