The Yak-15 was developed as a rapid transition aircraft to introduce jet propulsion into Soviet fighter aviation. Based on the Yak-3 airframe, it was powered by a German-derived turbojet engine and featured a conventional tailwheel landing gear, resulting in a distinctive exhaust arrangement beneath the fuselage.

Entering service in the late 1940s, the Yak-15 was primarily used as a conversion and training fighter, allowing pilots to transition from piston-engine aircraft to jet-powered fighters. Although produced in limited numbers and quickly superseded by more advanced designs, the Yak-15 marked an important milestone in the early Cold War development of Soviet jet aviation.
